How do I fit singing into my EXTREMELY busy life?

Here are some of our ideas:

You could sing in the shower (a cliché but a great way to achieve 10 minutes of vocalising without having to untangle a music stand).

You could mute the adverts when you watch TV and just sing some long notes (no prep or thinking, just unadulterated voice use!)

Sing unabashed to the hold music when you are on the phone to the energy company (and when they answer the phone, make sure you finish the verse or chorus you are on so it sounds intentional and confident).

Find an episode of your fave kids’ animation, mute it and improvise an opera to it! (This is a great Christmas game with anywhere between 1 and 20 people of all ages!)

Find an Internet radio station which focuses on YOUR musical decade (and sing and bop whilst you are getting ready, cooking, in the car, clearing out the loft).

Make yourself a playlist of things you love to sing (and keep it on your phone so it goes everywhere with you).

Get yourself a gorgeous looking folder (we love a bit of stationery at the Barn) and everything you learn (or want to learn) a new song, print it out and bung it in the gorgeous folder. This is a) very satisfying and b) means you are ready to pick up the folder and start singing whenever you get chance.

Having said all this, where singing is concerned, the more you put in; the more you get out. Try to timetable in a reason to sing each week. There are lots of groups who have now moved online so not even any going out in the rain needed! Happy singing everyone.

  1. My favourite is singing when out on long walks, no audience, and helps the miles go by :-)
